The Issue

It’s Fairtrade Fortnight! So what are you doing? Kicking a football? Checking out some music to Stop The Traffik? Huh?!

Fairtrade Fortnight gives us a reminder that the things we buy and eat or drink or wear can have a serious impact on the lives of those who made it.

Make the Big Swap
Our action last month focused on child labour in the cotton industry and in the past we have looked at similar issues in cocoa, tea and coffee. This Fairtrade Fortnight swap your usual stuff – your coffee, tea, chocolate – even your cotton tee shirt or soccer ball –  to Fairtrade stuff. Or if you’ve already made the swap (good on you!) encourage your friends and family to get on board.

Start the Music, Stop the Traffik
You heard about it last month. It is just about to happen (7 May) so check it out, and get there on the night!

Make footy fair!
Australian based fair trade company Etiko has launched a new brand of Fairtrade sports balls, Jinta Sport.

Sports ball are often made in developing countries under poor working conditions. The Jinta Fairtrade balls are produced under standards that prohibit child labour (through the Fairtrade certification and labelling system). The ‘Fairtrade premium’ puts money back into local communities where the balls are made.

A Fairtrade accredited manufacturer in Pakistan makes all the sports balls and the purchase of these balls helps fund pre-school programs for kids, health care for families and micro-credit programs to help people in the community set up their own enterprises.
