MessageDear Minister, I want to be sure when I buy timber products from overseas I am not buying illegally logged timber. I don’t want to steal from already impoverished communities and cheat them out of a fair price for their timber. I therefore commend the Australian Government on its election promise to stop illegally logged timber being sold in Australia. I would like to see all major timber retailers unable to sell illegally logged timber by the end of 2009. This requires timber entering the Australian market to be certified and audited as being legally logged. I also welcome the Government’s willingness to play a lead role in reducing deforestation in developing countries as deforestation accounts for approximately 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions. However funding for this is currently inadequate. I want to see the Australian Government substantially increase funding to at least $400m over the next 5 years to reduce deforestation within the Asia Pacific region. This should focus on building support for community based forest management projects with the informed consent of affected Indigenous communities. Please act urgently to ban the import of illegal timber products and support communities to build their own sustainable future.(required)
