Even the Waters Converge NCYC Film Brief

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Callling all film makers – here’s your brief for NCYC09.

All the worship at convention will focus on the theme of water. The hope is to have film footage of all the waters from the places delegates have come from. NCYC is looking for film makers to create short (say 3 min) digital movies of their local water that could be looped and used in a variety of ways through the worship times at convention. These films might be projected while other stuff is happening, like prayers, so they need to be nonnarrative, no dialogue, and looped. The water could be

a slow flowing river…

a fast mountain stream…

a dry inland creek bed…

BIG surf… irrigation channels…

a fountain in the city…

even your local swimming pool… …whatever.

Sure the images can have people, or boats or surfboards or whatever – just no dialogue needed. You can include sound and/or music, but the film may be screened without sound. You could make it a group process and spend ages on it, or you could just go out one afternoon and catch 3mins worth of water action.

Tech requirements

Whatever video cam you are shooting on, make sure you choose your best settings, because we’ll be projecting BIG at convention. We’re looking for 16:9 aspect ratio (widescreen). In order of priority this is how we’d prefer your submissions:

1. MiniDV tape in either DV or HDV (best option – you can have your tape back after convention)

2. High resolution Quicktime movie (at least 720px wide – no AVI files please)

3. DVD

Send your submission by 30th October 2008 to: NCYC09 – Even the waters converge at the address -1 Morrison Close Parkville Victoria 3052

Animale, reaping profits from forced labour

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Animale, a well known French brand that has been around for about 30 years in the fashion industry, has markets in 30 countries, ranging from advanced industrialised countries in Europe to developing ones in Asia, Latin America and Africa.

Visiting Animale shops or online stores, you will find that the prices of their clothing products ranged from US$500-2000

Nevertheless, success stories of the company – currently led by the President Director Jacques Ruc – are in extreme contrast to the livelihood of its workers.

WCC Internship Programme 2009

Friday, July 18th, 2008

The World Council of Churches (WCC) will welcome five young people (aged 18-30 years) to serve as interns in its Geneva offices from February 2009 to January 2010. Interns bring valuable experiences to the WCC at the same time as they undertake several modules of ecumenical learning.

The next 12 months’ internship period begins in February 2009. In Geneva, the interns will be assigned to one of the WCC working areas. They will carry out their tasks in co-operation with programme staff and under individualized supervision. During their stay in Geneva each intern is expected to plan an ecumenical project to implement in his or her home context when they return in February 2010.

The next generation of interns’ areas of work will be 1. accompanying churches in situations of conflict; 2. youth and ecumenical relationships; 3. visitors programme and media relations; 4. faith, science, technology and ethics; and 5. the WCC Commission on Faith and Order.

Successful candidates are people committed to the ideals of the ecumenical movement, who will bring their energy, commitment and a fresh vision to their specific work assignment. Applicants must send, along with their application, background information about their church or Christian youth network that will help them in implementing their proposed ecumenical project.

Closing date for receiving applications for the five internships is 15 September 2008. As the ability to work in English is a necessary qualification, applications must be written in English.

See the WCC website for more information and appilcation forms.

Submissions may be photos/stories of young workers, young union leaders at the workplace, at activities, at conferences, at team building events…. Alternatively, the photos/stories may be about iconic events, young trade union leaders significant to the Decent work for youth. Urgent help needed – Meryem Özsögüt

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

The Turkish government has jailed a woman trade unionist, Meryem Özsögüt, and has kept her in detention for nearly six months. LabourStart – the international work justice website has called on supporters and people of good will to give Meryem our much needed help. Meryem is a leader of the public sector union SES, and Public Services International (PSI) has launched a big online campaign demanding her release.
For more details and to add your signature, please click here now

This campaign will not take off, and we will not secure Meryem’s release, unless we can mobilize thousands of concerned people from around the world. Please do what you can to help this campaign go to lots of people that you know — forward it to other email lists, feel free to post information on church-related websites, use Facebook and blogs to spread the word …
