A Refugee Action Collective – Victoria Refugee Week action

It will all be over by 12.30pm.
WHERE: Meet at Atrium at Federation Square (opp. the Forum Theatre, Flinders St).
Playing with an instantly recognisable symbol for refugees and displaced persons, RAC invites you to join in a ‘Happening’ at 11.30am, Saturday 28th of June.
A pile of old suitcases will appear in the middle of the city.
Each suitcase represents the human suffering experienced by refugees, their need for a safe place to call home, as well as the riches they bring to our community
BRING: Old unwanted suitcase (they are very cheap at op shops) with a slogan painted on it. Wear a long coat.

The exhibition celebrates the hand-made and the value of traditional skills as cultural memory. Objects of all kinds and functions will be featured, from domestic utilitarian items to musical instruments, decorative items and textiles. Share in the many forms through which our migrant communities continue to maintain and express their cultures.

The official launch of Refugee Week in Victoria in conjunction with the much anticipated ‘made in australia’, an exhibition about Power, Complacency and Consequence, by Viv Mehes. Guest speakers Mr James Merlino, Minister Assisting the Premier on Multicultural Affairs; John Gibson, President, Refugee Council of Australia; and Caz Coleman, Hotham Mission Asylum Seeker Project. Stories by Arnold Zable, photography by Viv Méhes and music by Mesopotamia.

The Chamoru people of Guam (indigenous name Guahan) have resisted the take over their land and waters since the arrival of Europeans in 1668. They are not prepared to give up that struggle.The Donald Groom Fellow, Hannah Middleton of the Anti-bases Campaign, is bringing two of the Guahan people to Australia to speak of the plight of their people.
Dr Lisa Natividad and Julian Aguon will be in Melbourne on Thursday –Saturday, 12 – 14 June, to speak about the plight of their people.

Right Now is a Vibewire project. It is a media/arts competition aimed at raising awareness about the Victorian Charter of Human Rights. Right Now allows young people to respond to and engage with the charter through a variety of creative forms including film, podcast, writing (essay) and design. Right Now gives young artists and thinkers the opportunity to have their views on politics and humanity seen and read and heard. It aims to inspire both the creators and audience of the entries to take notice of and get involved in human rights based issues and campaigns.
Entries close the 25th of June.
